Private Lessons
Since beginning teaching in 2007, I’ve had the opportunity to share the skills I’ve acquired in my decades of study with hundreds of private students ranging in age from 6 to 93. The concepts and practice techniques I teach in a musical context are also applicable to other academic and physical disciplines and I genuinely enjoy helping my students utilize music-making as a means of self-improvement as well as self-expression. Music is, of course, a mode of creative expression but it can also be a game and I believe learning it should always be fun!
When the COVID-19 pandemic rendered most in-person music lessons (especially flute) too risky, I transitioned to teaching online. There were certainly some initial challenges to overcome, but I’ve found that the digital format is quite conducive to one-on-one learning and I've enjoyed helping guide my students through the technological shift. This transition also afforded me the freedom to relocate to my current home of Williamsburg, Virginia where I have since begun teaching in person again and leading the non-profit flute ensemble Flute Frenzy.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What Instruments do you teach?
Flute, Piccolo, Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Clarinet, Ukulele, Music Theory and Composition What's your general teaching style like? I always strive to create a positive and comfortable atmosphere during lessons, a safe space where students can experiment with the different parameters that shape their sound and playing style. I also stress the importance of the fundamentals, particularly rhythm and tone, while providing multiple approaches to mastering each concept and developing an personalized plan for each individual student. How long have you been teaching? 15 years. I've taught private lessons and masterclasses to kids, adults, and college students. I've also coached chamber music ensembles and taught themed music camps. What instrument do you like teaching the most? Flute. I've devoted much more time studying, exploring, and expanding the tonal possibilities of the flute than any other instrument so I have more intricate knowledge of its idiosyncrasies. That being said, I also love mixing it up and there's some amazing literature written for clarinet and sax that I also enjoy playing and teaching! What can you teach me that (most) other flute teachers can't? Probably a lot! I've studied one-on-one with jedi flute masters of extended techniques like Robert Dick and Greg Pattillo and I can teach all the modern techniques and sounds commonly found in contemporary flute music. This includes circular breathing, beatbox flute, singing & playing, multiphonics, looping, and many more. I have a very broad skill set outside of flute and am happy to share the knowledge I've acquired in composition, music production, podcasting, instrument doubling, tripling, quadrupling, etc. Will you help me learn on my own terms and at my own pace? Absolutely. I'm aware that practicing music is not everyone's top priority and that not everyone can devote as much time to their instrument as they'd like. I'll do my best to help you as much as I can whether you have one day a week to practice or seven! What age students do you teach? I'm currently accepting students ages 9 and up. Prospective students under 9 may be considered on a trial basis. What do you charge? $30 for a half-hour lesson, $44 for 45 minutes, $55 for an hour. How do I sign up? Use the form below or email me at [email protected] for more info or to schedule a trial lesson! |
